Pansear And Simisear

By Jo

The elemental monkeys were never really favorites of mine when the games first came out. They were advertised and had merchandise, though that never really helped improve my opinion of them. It wasn’t until I received my own Pansear in the Dreamyard and used my sister’s Pansage when level grinding in her game, that I realized how useful they little monkeys could be.

Pansear, the High Temp Pokemon, appears to be based off from a monkey, though also holds physical similarities to fire and flames. It seems to be wearing red ‘pants’, the waist zigzagging with its cream colored torso. Its arms and lower half of its face match its torso and its tail, upper half of its face, ears, and ‘hair’ are the same red as its ‘pants’. The very tip of Pansear’s tail is in the shape of a small flame, and its ‘hair’ appears to be sculpted in the same flame-like pattern. Pansear is the only non-starter Pokemon to have the starter-exclusive ability, Blaze. It is also the only member of the three elemental monkeys that doesn’t learn a move that is otherwise only available through TM (Pansage learns Grass Knot, and Panpour learns Scald). According to its pokedex entries, Pansear live in caves and volcanoes. When Pansear is angered the temperature of its head tuft reaches 600 degrees F. It uses that tuft of hair to roast berries. Pansear’s name seems to be a combination of the words ‘pan’ (most-likely a reference to chimpanzees) and ‘sear’. The ‘ear’ in its name could also be a reference to the three wise monkeys, Pansear being the representation of “hear no evil”. Pansear’s name could also be taken as a pun of pan searing.

Pansear can only evolve into its final form, Simisear, when exposed to a Fire Stone. It is the only Pokemon not to be introduced in the first generation games to be able to evolve via Fire Stone. Simisear, like its pre-evolution, has features of both monkeys and flames. Simisear appears to be wearing a pair of red pants as well, the edges zigzagging. Simisear’s tail is fluffy and resembles a puffy cloud of smoke as well as cottony-like, white shoulder pads. Its arms are the same shade red as its ‘pants’, ‘hair’, tail, upper half of its face, and outer ears. Its fingers, though, are the same crème color as its torso, lower half of its face, and toes – and it looks as if it is wearing fingerless gloves. According to its pokedex entries, it loves sweets because they become the fuel that it burns for energy. It apparently has a flame inside its body and scatters the embers from its head and tail to burn its foes. Simisear’s name most-likely comes from the words ‘simian’ (which are often referred to as being “higher primates” and are known as Old World monkeys and apes) and ‘sear’.

Pokemon Technical Machines And Hidden Machines

By JC

TMs and HMs. They stand for Technical Machines and Hidden Machines. Anyone who has played a Pokemon game has experience with them. TMs and HMs are undoubtedly useful, but not all of them, and while TMs are completely optional, a player must utilize HMs to advance the story. Throughout all the Pokemon games, there have been a combined 11 Hidden Machines: Cut, Fly, Surf, Strength, Flash, Whirlpool, Waterfall, Rock Smash, Dive, Defog, and Rock Climb. The current Pokemon Black and White series contain 6 HMs: Cut, Fly, Surf, Strength, Waterfall, and Dive.

In my experience, most of these HMs are a nuisance because they are mediocre at best, take up an attack slot, and are unable to be forgotten until further into the story. This results in having a 6th Pokemon that knows a bunch of HM moves, more commonly known as a “HM slave.” I find that only 3 out of 11 are actually any good. These are Fly, Surf, and Waterfall. Fly is a decent attack, but the instant transportation it provides is invaluable. Surf is my favorite HM. I don’t know what the general consensus is, but it’s by far my favorite and most useful HM. It lets you roam the seas, and it’s a great attack as well. I haven’t used Waterfall much, but it looks just as promising as Surf.

I wish Flash was not a HM, but I understand why it was. Flash was basically needed for one cave in Pokemon Red and Blue, and I don’t remember how many times it was needed for the other games. You didn’t have to use it for the cave, but it sure made it easier; especially since in Pokemon Red and Blue the cave was pitch black. Since TMs were one time use only, GameFreak made it impossible for a player to make a Pokemon learn it and accidently replace it. In Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, Flash is no longer a HM, but Defog replaces it and has a similar function.

A Home For Dwebble! Summary And Review

By JC

Hi guys! I will be offering a detailed summary and a review afterwards of the 11th episode of Pokemon Black and White. This episode starts out with Cilan preparing delicious sandwiches for Iris and Ash. Pikachu and Axew also enjoy their food without it getting stolen by Darumaka this time. Our heroes take a peek over some rocks to find a curious little Dwebble. They are delighted to see it in the process of choosing and making its home from a nearby rock. It then moves into its new shell, but is quickly kicked out when 3 bully Dwebble steal it from him. After beating up the owner, the bullies dig underground. Cilan cannot believe the injustice and sends out his Pansage to chase after the thieves. They are unsuccessful and the gang tries to calm down the disgruntled crab, but he lashes out in fear and ends up hurting Pansage.

A cut scene reveals Team Rocket meeting up with Pierce. They are given orders to infiltrate the Antimony Research Lab and to download the meteorite data. The sun is setting and the team is setting up camp for the night. Cilan uses a potion on Pansage, but he develops a fever. Iris comes to the rescue by whipping up a healing salve from nearby herbs. The team proceeds to sleep and we see Dwebble show its concern for the green monkey. As our heroes are sleeping, Team Rocket infiltrates the heavily secured research lab and accomplishes their mission. They report back to Pierce and are told to await further orders.

To everybody’s relief, Pansage makes a full recovery and the group heads out to help Dwebble get its home back. The bullies are spotted, but run away, only to be chased by Axew. Now that the wrong-doers are cornered, Dwebble vehemently insists that it wants to fight and get its house back by itself. The three are too much for it and again dig away. Knowing that the brave Pokemon only needs a fair fight, Cilan uses his food as bait to separate the trouble making trio. By using the environment and its deadly X-Scissor move, Dwebble takes back its house in a truly heroic manner. It becomes fond of Pansage and Cilan and decides to join him.

Pokemon Woobat And Swoobat

By Jo

Bats normally symbolize fear, darkness, and at times even super heroes. Though what I love about Pokemon is that the creators normally cause people to reevaluate what they’d normally think of when seeing something and turning the tables on them. Woobat and Swoobat are prime examples of said table turning.

Woobat, the Bat Pokemon, is small and furry. It’s about the least scary thing you could think of, which is the exact opposite of what normally comes to mind when thinking of bats. Its body consists of a great blue ball of fluffy fur, a small set of black bat wings and a pink, circular nose with heart-shaped nostrils. Its eyes appear to be hidden by its blue fluff, and its mouth only contains a pointed tooth in the center. A main character in the thirteenth Pokemon movie wore a hat with a Woobat on it. It was one of the first Unova region Pokemon to be seen. According to its pokedex entries, Woobat inhabit dark forests and caves. They emit ultrasonic waves from their nose to learn about their surroundings. The suction from their nostrils enables them to stick to cave walls during sleep. They apparently leave heart-shaped marks behind. Woobat seems to be the literal interpretation of bat with a heart-shaped nose and may be based off from a type of albino fruit bat. Its name seems to be a combination of the words ‘woo’ (a possible reference to the fact that it evolves based on happiness) and ‘bat’. The Woobat line shares many similarities with the Zubat line as they both evolve into their final form via happiness, both are referred to as being of the Bat Pokemon species and both lines have the ‘bat’ suffix at the end of their names.

Pokemon Hoenn, Third Gym

By Anonymous

You just beat Brawly in Dewford Town, now we have to head all the way to Mauville City. Mr. Briney will take you to Slateport City if you go and talk to him. In Slapteport City you will see a lot of merchants and what not. You will also run into a museum on marine related things like boats and submarines. You will have a bit of a walk to do to get to Mauville City when your done running around in Slateport City. Mauville City has a lot of things, it has the box shop and the game corner for starters. The daycare is also nearby. Once your finished walking around you can head on over to the gym. This gym is sat up matching the element of the gym, electric type. You will have to fight several trainers, they will mainly have Plusle and Minun, Electrike, and Voltorb. Just the regular electric type Pokemon you will encounter.

Watson is the gym leader, he is a jolly old man. I suggest you bring some Paralyze Heals or some Cheri Berries which cure paralyzed Pokemon. When the battle starts Watson will send out a Voltroc at level twenty. Don’t let it use Rollout too many times, it also knows Self destruct so be prepared for anything. It also knows Shock Wave which is an alright electric attack, it can do some damage. If you manage to take out the Voltrob Watson will send out a Magneton. Magneton is the evolved form of Magnemite. Be ready for a powerful battle, this Magneton knows Thunder Wave that can paralyze your Pokemon, look out for that attack. It also knows Supersonic which can confuse your Pokemon. It is pretty tough to attack if your Pokemon is paralyzed and confused. It also knows Sonic Boom which does about twenty damage or so.

Munna And Musharna

By Jo

In the first generation games and their remakes there was a female picnicker on Route 10 that mentioned wishing there was a pink Pokemon with flowers on it. Fast forward some ten years and out comes Munna, a Pokemon that fits the description Carol gave.

Munna is small and pink has rose-colored (nearly red) eyes, and sort of resembles a piggy bank. It has purple flowers scattered around it and could possibly be based off from the Baku myth (the same one Drowzee is based off from) in which a tapir-like creature eats dreams. Munna could also be based of traditional Japanese incense burners called “koro”. According to its Black pokedex entry, Munna constantly floats in the air. Despite this though, it does not have the ability Levitate. It also states that those whose dreams are eaten by Munna forget what the dreams had been about. Its White pokedex entry says that it eats the dreams of both people and Pokemon. Munna is the only Pokemon to evolve by Moon Stone since the third generation, as Skitty was formally the latest to be released. When it devours a pleasant dream, it expels a pink colored mist. Munna’s name is most-likely a combination of the words ‘moon’ and ‘luna’ (both meaning the same thing), which is probably a reference to dreams normally occurring when the moon is present.

Pokemon Patrat And Watchog

By Jo

Normal-type Pokemon have always been pretty interesting. Every now and then you’ll come across a normal-type that resembles an actual animal, though has a bit of a twisted design so that it doesn’t resemble it too much (change in color, a feature that’s exaggerated, etc). Patrat and Watchog are prime examples of normal-types with a twist.

Patrat is small and rodent-like. It holds resemblance to a chipmunk, having chubby cheeks and a small brown body. Physically it resembles a prairie dog as well, as its limbs are a bit stubby, their midsections are a bit bigger, and they both have longer tails. However, Patrat’s eyes are ringed red and yellow and a black band surrounds both eyes on either side so that they resemble glasses or goggles. In every generation of the games, there has been a two-stage normal type evolutionary line that is encountered early in the game (Rattata in Kanto, Sentret in Johto, Zigzagoon in Hoenn, and Bidoof in Sinnoh). Patrat seems to be the Unova variant of that theme. Though ironically, Patrat has the lowest base stat out of all fifth generation Pokemon. According to its pokedex entries, they can use the food stored in their cheeks to keep watch for days. Being an extremely cautious species, Patrat take shifts to maintain constant watch over their nests. They feel insecure without a lookout. Apparently, they communicate with others with their tails. The way they stuff their cheeks with food is similar to what Chipmunks do, though their watchful habits seem to be based off from prairie dogs. Patrat’s name seems to be a combination of the words ‘patrol’ and ‘rat’, though could also be a pun on the term “pack rat”.

The Deino Line

By Jo

With every new generation to the games, there comes at least one dragon type with a three stage evolutionary line. The fifth generation came out with two, the Axew and Deino lines. Deino, though, has dragon as its secondary type and has a unique type combination that no other Pokemon outside of its evolutionary line shares.

Deino is primarily a blue dinosaur-like creature with a sort of black hair/fur covering its neck, head, and most of its face. Its neck fur is speckled with magenta spots and it has a ragged, blue tail. Deino’s and Bagon’s evolutionary lines are the only Pokemon exclusively in the Dragon egg group. According to Ken Sugimori, the Deino line was originally intended to be made up of cyborg dragons – part tank and part dragon. The idea was scrapped until late in the game where the creators decided to base the line on the Yamata no Orochi (a serpent-like creature with many heads and tails). According to Deino’s pokedex entries, Deino tends to bite everything and isn’t much of a picky eater. They cannot see, so they tackle and bite to learn their surroundings. Because of this, their bodies are riddled with wounds. Approaching it carelessly is extremely dangerous. Its name seems to come from the words ‘dino’ (a shortened version of the word for “dinosaur”) and ‘ein’ – German for “one”.

Once Deino reaches level 50, it evolves into Zweilous. Zweilous shares many physical traits with its pre-evolution, though has two heads and a wider body. Zweilous, like Deino, has the same sort of black hair covering its neck, head, and most of its face, and is primarily colored blue. It has four legs and two appendages coming off from its back that appear to be wing-like. The red marks on its stomach seem to come from its original design from when it was supposed to be a cyborg-dragon, as they’re tire-mark shaped. Alphabetically, Zweilous is the last Pokemon listed. According to its pokedex entries, Zweilous’s two heads do not get along with each other. Because of this, they compete with each other for food and end up always eating too much. After Zweilous have eaten all of the food in their territory, they move to a new area. Zweilous’s name most-likely comes from the words ‘zwei’ (which means “two” in German) and ‘jealous’ – as the two heads are known to compete for food.

Generation Starters Of Old And New

By JC

Hey guys, so Pokemon Black and White has been out for a while and I think people are starting to warm up to the new batch of Pocket Monsters (if you didn’t like them already). At first I thought the new Pokemon looked awkward and that their names weren’t very creative. I was beginning to think that Nintendo had no more ideas left, but the inhabitants of Unova have grown on me in just a short time. It’s been a while since I’ve played my Pokemon Black Version, but I remember clearly when I had to choose my starter. I chose Snivy—he looked the cutest and the coolest. Oh and it’s pronounced SN-IVY, in case you didn’t know. The Unova starters—Snivy, Oshawott, and Tepig—are great, but how do they compare to the starters of past generations?

The Kanto starters are almost as iconic as Pikachu itself. Bulbasaur, Chamander, and Squirtle remain perennial favorites. There’s not much I can say about them that you don’t already know. They’ve got great names, great artwork, and great voices, what’s not to love? Bulbasaur is like a dinosaur with a plant symbiont attached to its back. Charmander is a fire lizard (salamander?) Squirtle is like a blue mini ninja turtle. The original trio set the standard really high for the next generation of starter Pokemon.

I remember all the hype surrounding the release of Pokemon Gold and Silver. I know I was excited to get the games and see the new Pokemon. The Johto starters include Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile. Chikorita looks like a dwarf brontosaurus (my best description based on what it involves into). Cyndaquil’s Pokedex information describes it as the “fire mouse” Pokemon, but it has a really long nose. Totodile is easily the most familiar. It’s a chibi crocodile that stands on its hind legs. I felt like the creators did an excellent job on these starters and found them very stylish.

Pokemon Mudkip

By Anonymous

So I heard you like Mudkips? Everyone does, you just can’t fight it. They are the cutest Pokemon you can get, that is just an opinion though. How do you get a Mudkip? Mudkip is a starter Pokemon along with Treecko and Torchic in the Hoenn region. You have to get one of them from Professor Birch, the professor of the Hoenn region that studies Pokemon environments and habitats. His lab is located in Littleroot Town. All of his starters are at level five, just like all of the starters in all of the regions. Treecko is the grass type Pokemon, that looks kind of like a gecko. Torchic is the fire type Pokemon, which looks sort of like a baby chick. And Mudkip, the mudfish Pokemon we all know and love, is the water type Pokemon you can receive. Let’s get our Mudkip now!

Everything will go by pretty smooth for a while. You may encounter a member of Team Aqua or a member of Team Magma, but all in all everything will go by easily. When you arrive in Rustboro City to take the gym challenge so you can get your first badge and be one eighth closer to be able to challenge the Pokemon League. The leader of the Rustboro City gym is Roxanne. Roxanne trains rock type Pokemon. Rock type Pokemon tend be preferred for the first gym. I don’t know why. All but in the Johto region. In Kanto there is Brock for rock type Pokemon. In Hoenn there is Roxanne for the rock type Pokemon, and in Sinnoh there is Roark for the rock type Pokemon. I believe in the Unova region the first gym does not use rock type Pokemon. Anyway, time to get back on topic.
