Surprise, Surprise Shiny Mimikyu Plush Toy Secretly Released

To my surprise on my weekly trip to the Pokemon Center in Fukuoka, Japan, I stumbled upon what looked like a dark colored Mimikyu plush toy. I thought maybe I was still half asleep, but as I got closer, it hit me, this was actually a shiny version of Mimikyu!!!

There was actually no warning of the Mimikyu release on any of the Pokemon Center websites or news sites until after the actual release. It was definitely a pleasant surprise.

My thoughts are that because Mimikyu is so popular, the release was kept a secret to help control the amount of people at the Pokemon Center at one time. It sometimes gets a little crazy!!! It was also released on a weekday and not a weekend so there would not be people fighting over them.

Mimikyu is identical to the original Pokemon Center Mimikyu, except for its grey color. Its very squeezably soft. The material is loose, just like if it were a real sheet covering Mimikyu. A great addition for any Pokemon collector. It is also made in the Philippines and not China which has been the trend for 2017.

On the same day I got another surprise, the Pokemon Center also released a new Lycanroc plush toy. This one is called “Dusk” form. Its very similar to the Midday form, but with a nice orange color instead. This was a great surprise.

I was able to buy the Takara Tomy version of the Dusk form Lycanroc a couple weeks before, but I am glad that the Pokemon Center also release one. What makes it even better is that the two versions are quite different.

On the Pokemon Center version, the legs are long and skinny but it does manage to stand up. Of course the stitching is excellent as usual with the Pokemon Center plush toys. There is alot of detail and its a definite must for any Pokemon Collector.

Of course you can still find both of these, as well as the original Mimikyu on Pokevault.com. But with the holidays fast approaching, they might not be around for too long.

$6 Million in Fake Pokemon Found in Korea

As all of you know “fake” or “bootleg” Pokemon items have become a huge problem. Trying to capitalize on the worldwide popularity of Pokemon, unauthorized sellers in China make fake or bootleg Pokemon plushies and other goods. Today there was a huge bust in South Korea. Over $6 million in fake Pokemon plushies were confiscated. Most of these plushies were headed for game center claw machines across South Korea.

Most people think “Whats the harm if my Pokemon plushie is fake?”. But there are several things that you dont know. First, it affects the profits of the company that makes them (Nintendo, Pokemon Center, etc). When these companies lose money from sales of unauthorized Pokemon items, they inturn raise the prices to try to get back all of the lost revenue. Thus making Pokemon items more expensive for ALL OF US!!!!

Secondly its illegal to sell fake or bootleg plushies. Most of the sellers on Ebay, Amazon, etc that are selling fake plushies have no idea that they are fakes. The sellers they buy from advertise them as “directly from China”. While this is true that they come directly from China, they are unauthorized. It is 100% illegal to make, produce or sell products with the Pokemon likeness without the written consent of Pokemon, Nintendo, etc. Thus, if you are selling fake Pokemon items, whether you know it or not, you can be held responsible. Having studied business law at university and having 20 years in the Pokemon retailing business I know that this is 100% true, however rarely enforced.  It is estimated that more than 50% of the Pokemon plushies on Ebay are fakes or bootlegs (I personally think its close to 70%).

Lastly, fake Pokemon are made in unauthorize factories that produce them without any strict safety guidelines. They can use child labor and can contain some dangerous chemicals, lead paints, etc. Im not saying that they are all dangerous, but the factories are not regulated for safety standards like other authorized Pokemon factories. Would you want your child playing with a toy from an unauthorized factory???

Hopefully this is just the beginning of the crackdown on illegal Pokemon items and other countries will follow suit. We are a long way away from getting rid of fake Pokemon items, but hopefully other countries will begin the long process of getting rid of the fakes once and for all.

Fake Vs Real Japanese Takara Tomy Umbreon How To Tell The Difference

Last week I bought an Umbreon plush toy on what I thought was a reliable website. Unfortunately as it turned out I was very disappointed. When I purchased the Umbreon, the seller told me to be patient as it was coming from overseas. Overseas? I am in Japan. Why would a Japanese Umbreon plushie come from overseas when they are only sold in Japan. When I got the package, I knew before opening it up that it was a bootleg or fake. The package was sent from China. China and Hong Kong are the two countries that bootleg the most Pokemon toys. Upon opening it, to the untrained eye, it looks authentic. The Takara Tomy paper tag was attached and was authentic. BUT, then upon closer inspection, yep, I was right. I got my first ever bootleg. I was angry, disappointed and most of all embarrassed that I actually bought a fake. I have been selling Pokemon for 15+ years and have prided my sell on the fact that I have never bought a fake. But because there are so many fakes out there, it can happen to anyone quite easily. I had a bad feeling when I bought it and should have listened to my insticts. It was a good price and too good to be true.

So, I would like to help those of you who want to do a simple check to see if your Umbreon is authentic or a bootleg. It can be really hard to tell the difference, but here are a few tips so that you dont get ripped off.

The bootleg that I bought is one of the most common bootlegs. It is sold all over Ebay, at most anime conventions, and recently has even popped up on Amazon.

How to tell if you got one of these fake Umbreons:

The easiest way to tell at a glance is probably Umbreon’s fur. The authentic Takara Tomy Umbreon as well as most Takara tomy plush toys have somewhat rough fur. Its not the minky type fabric that the Pokemon Center Umbreon has. Notice in the picture that the real Umbreon has a more black or dark colored course type fabric while the bootleg Umbreon has a lighter dark gray, minky type fabric. But this ONLY applies to the Takara Tomy version. The Japanese Pokemon Center Umbreon plush toy (standing version) has the minky fabric. The minky fabric version was only made in the standing pose and has the Pokemon Center tags on it. So, if you have an Umbreon with minky fabric in a sitting pose with a Takara Tomy tag, you got a bootleg.

The next way to tell is the size. Although this can be rather difficult if you do not have an authentic one to compare it to. All plushies, even identical ones can vary in size slightly, but in general the authentic Takara Tomy Umbreon stands about 8.5″ (22cm) tall from the bottom to the tips of its ears. It also seems to stand up more straight that the fake one. Whereas the bootleg plushie tends to fall backwards with its front paws off the ground and measures about 8″ or 20cm if you can get it to sit flat or about 7.5″ (15.5cm) if its in the falling backwards position.

Another way to tell is the eyes. Both the authentic Takara Tomy Umbreon and the Pokemon Center Umbreon both have similar eyes. They are an orangish-red color. NOT dark red. The bootleg version has dark red eyes and often times the stitching is not very good. In addition, the bootleg version Umbreon’s eyes seem to be indented more than the authentic version.

The lower corner of the eye is sewn in a way that the eyes seem to be pushed in or indented. It almost looks like a dimple. The authentic version eyes are pretty flat against the face. Also, the black part of the eye on the authentic version is rounded at the top and fits the curvature of the eye. On the fake version, the top of the black part of the eye goes straight across and does not seem to fit the way the eye curves and looks strange.

Basically what I think this bootlegger did was use the same fabric that was used in the Pokemon Center version of Umbreon and try to copy the Takara Tomy sitting version. So this bootleg is kind of a mix of the two different Umbreons.

Notice when you put the Pokemon Center standing version next to the bootleg sitting version, they have the exact same minky fabric, although Takara Tomy never has a minky fabric. Its always a more course type fabric.

Well, I hope this helped those of you that want to find out if you bought an authentic plush. The same bootlegger has made all the Eeveelutions, so the same rules on how to tell apply to Eevee, Espeon, Flareon, Jolteon, Leafeon, Glaceon and Vaporeon as well. Luckily I didnt buy any of those, so I dont have one to show you a comparison, but you should be able to tell.

You can also check out our Youtube video to see the difference between the authentic and bootleg Umbreon plushies.

Japan Pokemon Center Inkay Campaign Merchandise

As most of you know by now, the Pokemon Centers in Japan have a new campaign that is dedicated solely to the adorable squid Pokemon, Inkay. On January, 18, 2014, the Pokemon Centers in Japan released a bunch of new merchandise solely featuring Inkay. Lets take a look at some of the items that were available.

First, a personal favorite of mine, the large lifesize Inkay plush toy. This plush toy is awesome. It measures about 15″ or 38cm tall. It has very soft fur and very nice, detailed stitching. This was probably the most popular item from this campaign. It seems almost everyone had one in their basket at the Pokemon Center.

The next item I would like to introduce is the Inkay ceramic plate. This is a set of 2 gorgeous ceramic plates. It is very similar to the Christmas plates that come out every year, but you get two plates in this set, one big and one small. The glaze on the plate shines. They are great to use, or display on your shelf. Along with the ceramic plate, there was also a ceramic cup and bowl.

There was also several keychains, charms and straps including a rubber keychain, a  plush keychain where the chain can be reversed so that Inkay is upside down, and a  set of two charms. One of the charms features Inkay right-side up and the other is  upside-down.

For every day use, there was an iPhone 5 soft cover that can be used on either your  iPhone 5 or iPhone 5s. It protects your iPhone from bumping around and getting  damaged. I have one, they work great!!! There is a plush Inkay pass case which can  be used when you ride the train or bus. Just put your magnetic train or bus card in the clear slot on the bak of the pass case and when you get on the train or bus, just wave Inkay over the sensor. Very cool. And of course, there is a plush coin purse for all the female Inkay fans.

For those of you who are students, you might like some of the school supplies that came out. There was a file folder to store your school papers in, a ball pen, mechanical pencil, and a spiral notebook.

For more pictures and descriptions of the Inkay Campaign items, be sure to visit Pokevault.com.

2012 Japan Pokemon Center Eevee Collection Goods

Sorry for posting this so late, but there have been alot of wonderful “Eevee Collection” merchandise released at the Pokemon Centers in Japan. The Pokemon Centers are releasing merchandise in 4 different rounds. So far round one, two and three have been released with round four due out in early December.

Some of the first merchandise to go on sale were the Takara Tomy eeveelution plushies. They released all 8 of the eeveelutions (Eevee, Espeon, Flareon, Jolteon, Leafeon, Umbreon and Vaporeon). These 8 plushies were sold almost exclusively at the Pokemon Centers in Japan. Amazon Japan sold the Eevee plush, but not any of the 7 others. There was a very very limited number of toy stores that also sold them. These plushies are in the sitting position.

They are very detailed and well made. Most of them are about 6-7″ tall (15-17cm).  They come with a new special re-designed Takara Tomy paper tag that features the Eeveelution on it. They are relatively soft but are nice and sturdy and well made.

Round two was a huge release of merchandise.  The Pokemon Center was absolutely crazy. People were pushing and shoving to grab any and everything that they could find. There was a “Pokemon Center” version of all 8 plush characters. This time it was a standing version. Like the Takara Tomy plushies, the Pokemon Center Eevee plushies also had newly designed very large paper tags in addition to a long white “Eevee Collection” tag. These plushies are slightly smaller than the Takara Tomy version, but are much softer and have better detail. They are very similar to the canvas plushies that were sold a couple years ago, but are bigger.

All 8 characters were also made into a set of a coaster and a placemat. These were highly sought after and sold out immediately. They are made of nice fabric. The coaster matches the placemat. Each eeveelution was also featured on plastic cups. These cups are awesome. They are made of melamin which is a type of hard plastic. They are very sturdy and the Eeveelution image seems to be printed or painted on the cup, so it will last a long time. There was also a bowl and plate set that also sold out within minutes.

One of the best items was the Eevee plush cushion. It is perfect to put on your bed or lay on when you watch tv. Its absolutely stunning. I really recommend it.

All 8 Eeveelution mini Pokedoll plush keychains also went on sale the same day. They are perfect to attach to your keyring, suitcase, purse or just about anywhere. Very cute small versions of the Pokedoll plushies that were sold a few years ago.

There was also a vanity bag and a mini pouch that featured all 8 Eeveelutions. One of the most popular items was the Eeveelution lap blanket. It was a small blanket made to put on your lap or for a very small child. It was made in very limited quantity and was gone within a matter of minutes.

Each of the 8 Eeveelutions was also featured on a clear file folder. Its been 3 years since the last Eeveelution file folders were released, so this was a nice surprise. The file folders are size A4 which is the same size as a normal 8.5 x 12 sheet of paper, so these are great to use at school.

There was also a limited edition cookie tin that came with Eeveelution shaped cookies, three different Nintendo 3DS cartridge cases and a Nintendo 3DSLL Eevee silicon cover.

The third round of goods from the Eevee Collection was Pokemon TCG card gaming supplies. There was an Eevee deck box featuring all the Eeveelution characters and three different sets of Eeveelution deck sleeves. The deck boxes and sleeves sold out in less than 15 minutes with hundreds of people grabbing as many as they could before they were gone.

There was also an Eevee Collection 3 ring hard cover type binder that you can store your cards in. The binder also came with 8 limited edition Eeveelution promo cards. The Eevee one is a holofoil and the other 7 are not.

The 9th card will be given away on December 14th with the release of the two new booster pack series.

Also, while supplies lasts, if you bought 2000 yen or more worth of Eeveelution items, you received a limited edition Eeveelution postcard.  Eevee, Espeon, Flareon, Glaceon, Leafeon, Umbreon and Vaporeon were all featured as well as a the mystery postcard which was a group shot featuring all 8 characters. These postcards are real postcards which can be used. Of course they require a stamp in order to be sent.

Stay tuned for part 4 of the Eeveelution merchandise.

New Meloetta Plush Toys

By Pokevault

The Pokemon Center just released the first of the Meloetta plush toys. They have both the Aria and Pirouette forms. These plushies are really cool. They are similar to a doll in appearance, but the overall design is great. Of course they are well made.

Meloetta Plush

The Meloetta plush toys are made of nice fabric. Its very soft to the touch. The way the hair is made of fabric is also very unique. It is flexible and can obviously move around which is very nice.

The best part of them is probably the face. The eyes are really large and the stitching is very detailed. It really makes the plush look alive.

The only downside of these new plushies is the fact that they can not stand up without falling over. Obviously by the size of their legs, there is no way that they will stand up, but they are still really cool.

Meloetta Plush

There was also some other Meloetta merchandise released like file folders, stickers, hair ties, bags, straps, soft gel-type charms, memo pads, a hat, a face towel and much more. Come check it out.
