Sinnoh Starters And Evolutions: The Turtwig Line

By Jo

It’s small, green, and prefers to take its time when carrying out tasks. Turtwig, the Tiny Leaf Pokemon, is the Sinnoh region’s grass-type starter. Turtwig is based off from turtles, more specifically the snapping turtle, as its yellow colored lower jaw would illustrate.

Turtwig starts out as being small, though heavy, weighing the most out of any of the starters. Its pokedex entries state that the shell on its back is actually made from soil, which hardens when it drinks water. On a healthy Turtwig, that soil-shell should feel a bit moist. When in the sun, Turtwig undergo photosynthesis with its body and make oxygen. Though if the leaves on its head wilt, it is most-likely thirsty. Turtwig’s name most-likely comes from the words ‘turtle’ and ‘twig’.

Once it reaches level 18, Turtwig will evolve into Grotle. Turtwig, along with Totodile, are the only starters who evolve at level 18, which is the highest level in which a starter Pokemon evolves via leveling up. Grotle is the heaviest of any of the middle evolutions of the starters, and even outweighs most of the final evolutions for the starters, with the exceptions of Venusaur, Meganium, and Torterra. Ironically, all of the exceptions are grass-types. Grotle’s pokedex entries say that it normally knows where fresh water is. It also states that some Pokemon like to eat the berries that grow on the tree on its shell, and that it will carry those Pokemon to its source of fresh water. Grotle is most-likely based off from a snapping turtle, though could also be based on a world turtle as world turtles are said to carry worlds and universes on their backs. Grotle’s name probably comes from the words ‘ground’ and ‘turtle’, though also – as it is the Grove Pokemon – it may also come from the word ‘grove’ as well.

My Favorite Starter Pokemon

By Anonymous

With the release of generation 5 I have one very important question for you, “which Pokemon starter is your favorite?’ While you ask yourself that question please allow me to give my input on which starters I think are the best ever. Just because I say starters Doesn’t mean their all in one generation. I mean a favorite grass starter, fire starter, and a water starter.

My favorite fire starter definitely has to be the new one, Tepig. Why you may ask? Well for one I think this starter is extremely unique. I mean look at it! It’s an awesome fire piggy. Not to mention its evolutions make me squeal every time I see it. If you still need other reasons here are more to think about. For one, Tepig gets a great evolutionary move set down the line if you train it properly. Not to mention the addition of and additional type which is Fight. Tepig can learn about all of the powerful fire moves and gets a special move for triple battles. So not only is this Pokemon extremely cute, It is well rounded, a great first pick for an adventure, and gains a sub type that makes up for its weaknesses.

Turtwig: Generation IV Starter Pokemon

Turtwig, or Naetle in Japanese, is an adorable turtle-like Grass Pokemon. He is #387 in the National Pokedex and is the grass starter for Sinnoh region in the Generation IV games. He is mostly green and brown, with a little twig growing out of the top of its head. His shell is actually made out of soil, and is slightly soft and moist. Your rival in Diamond, Pearl and Platinum would choose Turtwig as their starter if you chose the water Pokemon, Piplup.

Turtwig evolves into Grotle at level 18, and into Torterra at level 32. Turtwig and his evolutionary line are the third set of turtle Pokemon, following Squirtle, Wartortle and Blastoise of Generation I, and Torkoal in Generation III. In Generation V, a fourth line of turtle Pokmemon were introduced; Purotooga and it’s evolved form Abagoura. Turtwig is the only turtle Pokemon of the Grass type. Turtwig’s highest base stat is Attack, closely followed by Defense. It’s worst stat is it’s Speed, which makes sense as Turtwig is a turtle Pokemon. Since Turtwig is a grass Pokemon, he is strong against Ground, Rock, and Water type Pokemon. He is weak against Bug, Fire, Flying, Ice, and Poison types. Its strongest Special Attack is Leaf Storm, which it learns as a Torterra at level 45.
