Hey, it’s time for another tournament report with Kohrok! This time, we have a slightly better outlook than last week. So we were at my local league where I judge, lead league, and help out. It’s also pretty much the only active league Western PA, so we’re pretty proud of that. If anyone’s interested in joining, just e-mail us at MurrysvillePokemonLeague@gmail.com

So, today I decided to bail on the VileGar from last week. Losing every game (basically) was pretty poor, and I wasn’t looking forward to more losses. So I switched to my Luxray/Garchomp deck from State Championships, tossed in some Sableye to block the donk, and got set to go. Oh, and Hoolon Mike had graduated this past month, so I gave him a Flareon EX as a graduation present because he’s an awesome person.
I got to the site early, helped AJ set up, talked to people, made some trades, and at 11:15, the event started. We had less than 10 Juniors and Seniors, but we had 14 Masters, meaning 4 rounds, top 2. This would end up coming to bite me later on.
Round 1 v. Joey G (Gyarados)
We both start Sableye, and I lose the flip. Last week, he was playing Sableye Donk, so I figured I was basically done. I sat around, watched him try to mill through his deck with 2 Uxies, a Professor Juniper, and he wasn’t going for a seeker/Scoop Up on his benched Crobat G, which was weird. I didn’t even realize he was playing Gyardos until a few turns later when we both were more developed and he got a Gyarados out. Now, at this point, I was upset with myself for dropping Lucario GL, because I now had a terrible matchup. I tried my best, trying to Lock up some stuff, but he got out, and managed to sweep. Good Game!
(0-1)
Round 2 v. Tom D (Scizor/Umbreon)
Tom is one of our League Leaders, and I felt like he might have a decent run today. He wasn’t too happy about having to play me, but we laughed about it. Anyhow, he got some Scizors and Umbreons, but with Garchomp and Luxray, I managed to move around all of them, and snipe for a win, 6-1. Good game, Tom!
(1-1)
Round 3 v. Andrew S (Base Set Haymaker)
Let me begin by saying that I have played since Base, Jungle ,and Fossil were the only sets out. I remember people playing decks with Hitmonchan, Electabuzz, and Scyther, and that’s exactly what I ran into. He was playing the base reprints, complete with other basic stuff (Communication/Trader, Juniper/Oak, Bill) and it was just a fun deck. Unfortunately, it’s damage output can’t keep up with Luxchomp, and through sniping, revenge kills on Electabuzz with Promocroak, and Crobat’s damage placement, I pulled out a win. Awesome idea, and I have great respect for you, Andrew!
(2-1)
Round 4 v. Bob Aland (Yanmega)
Bob’s been coming to our league as of late, but he’s a relatively new player. I really liked some of the stuff he’s come up with. Today, he was playing Yanmega, and let me begin by saying I LOVE the idea for HGSS on. However, today was not his day. I felt pretty crummy about it, but I started Sableye/Unown Q/Collector, and grabbed Ambipom G, and Uxie, and with an Energy and Gain, managed to Snap attack his lone Yanma for the game. It’s a rough way to win, but I’m glad he made .500, and I hope that he plays it next season – it should be good.
(3-1)
So at this point, my friend Peter had just gone from (3-0) to (3-1), losing to the only (4-0), Hoolon Mike. Lamar, who had lost to Peter in round 3, was now also (3-1), so the three of us were fighting to make top 2 with Hoolon. Unfortunately, my Round 1 opponent, Joey, had ended up going (2-2), losing to Hoolon and Lamar. The announcement is made…and Lamar makes the cut with his Sableye Donk. Peter and I are pretty upset, while Lamar is just confused. We all talk it over, and top cut begins.
I didn’t play, but basically, Hoolon won game 1, Lamar managed to go first and win game 2, and then Hoolon came back to win out.
We all open packs (I got 5th, so none for me), and we talk and trade. I manage to trade for a Mew Prime and a Yanmega Prime, and I’m trying to get a Magnezone Prime soon from one of the other kids who was there. They all head home, and try to convince me to come to Nationals with them. We’ll have to see…it’s pretty far away and expensive.
Pros:
Lots of good players
Peter going (3-1) with Ursaring/Crobat and T4’ing (T2 in my mind!)
AJ for being an awesome organizer
Hoolon for graduating!
Slops:
Sableye
Sableye
Md-BW Format in general is pretty lame, I’m glad it’s leaving.
