Pokemon Lottery Shiny Version Promo Card Sets

By Tony Tanaka

Back in July, 2010, there was a very rare set of Shiny Ho-oh, Lugia, Entei, Suicune and Raikou Japanese Pokemon lottery promo cards released. From April, 2010 until June 30th, 2010, entries for this special lottery contest were accepted. Only Japanese residents were allowed to enter the lottery.

If you bought two packs of either Legends Heart Gold, Soul Silver, Revived Legends, or Lost Link during this time and cut out the bar codes from the two booster packs and sent it into the Pokemon lottery office in Tokyo, your name will be entered into a drawing for these beautiful card sets. The 5 cards were divided into two different sets. Set “A” featured Shiny Ho-oh and Lugia and set “B” featured Shiny Suicune, Raikou, and Entei.

You were only able to choose one set, so either set “A” or set “B”. These cards were different because they are the “shiny” or alternate color variations of the Pokemon characters. Each character has a unique variation of its normal color. For example, Ho-oh has a blue tail and is more of a brown color. Also, each character has a unique skill on the card that is unique to this lottery campaign and not on other cards. These cards were numbered black star promo #062-066/L-P.

Now the bad news. There was only 1000 of these cards produced for all of Japan. The cards have been skyrocketing in price ever since they were distributed in July, 2010. On average the cards are selling for roughly $200-300 each, if you are lucky enough to even find them.

This promotion brings back memories of the old “Triple Get” lottery promotion back in 2002, where the winners received either the Charizard, Venusaur and Blastoise promo set, or the Meganium, Feraligatr and Typhlosion set. These cards sold for around $100 each which by comparison is alot cheaper than the this set. Probably due to the fact that there was 3000 of the older 2002 set made and only 1000 of this set.

There was a second lottery shiny promo card set made in 2010 as well. This time there was 5000 sets made. The set was a six card set that included Shiny Rayquaza, Deoxys, Dialga, Palkia, Groudon, and Kyogre. These cards seem to be selling for around $75 each making this set look cheap in comparison to the other set. The promos are black star #071-076/L-P.
