Ash’s Oshawott

By Brandon Yeo

Oshawott is the new otter species starter that was announced in Generation V, clad in a blue outer layer with blue pointy ears and a somewhat gloomy frown. From this description I thought, this is going to be one sad and grouchy pokemon. Also, when Pokemon Black and White (B&W) was first announced, you might have thought, “Wow an otter!”, now this is a first. But it turns out that Oshawott ends up as one of the more appealing pokemon in Pokemon Best Wishes (Japanese series). Initially, I actually thought that he was sort of weird as compared to other starters like Turtwig or Squirtle or Bulbasaur, seemingly normal animal-like creatures, but an otter? I believe however that they have really done a good job with Oshawott in the anime. He starts off with a flashy introduction to display his aesthetic cuteness as he attempts to sway Shootie(Trip) to choose him as his starter. From the point of that scene, I figured if Ash caught an oshawott of a similar interesting personality, he’ll definitely be a hit. True enough, his hilarious antics and actions were seen throughout the anime even as he is seen attempting to replace Pikachu by pushing him off Ash’s shoulders and throwing his shell upon it failing to defend him from Ducklett’s scald. More comedic is when he jumps into the attract done by Emolga when she fights Mincinno in a battle, really at such points of time, nobody has a clue what he is thinking or doing.

Truly, his unique personality of arrogance, kindness and laziness permeates throughout the anime. Being such a unique character, he (fortunately) has received much air-time and character development plot especially as he trains to defeat watchog and master his finisher, aqua jet. I figure the anime studio has finally decided to develop a character well apart from that of Pikachu, a job well done indeed.

What would I like to see from Oshawott in the future? The first simple rule would never to evolve Oshawott simply because it will ruin his charm and his aesthetic appeal which has definitely booster the potential of the Best Wishes series. Secondly, I would like to see conflicts between Ash and Oshawott, simply because of his carefree attitude and somewhat arrogance to other pokemon. It may simply not seem right accepting Oshawott for what he might be, perhaps a slight change to his arrogance might help, of course this could be part of plot development. A last change or perhaps no change would be to keep creating his comedic appearances as they indeed make Pokemon a better and enjoyable series.

Sincerely, only by creating ingenious and unique characters, can the Pokemon series improve and become increasingly interesting to watch since it has come a very long way of more than 10 years. Something new has to emerge and perhaps this is but a first step.

Paul’s Chimchar

By Carl00456

Chimchar had a rough time with Paul. He was regularly abused up to the point of his abandonment, though Paul still made harsh comments about Chimchar when Ash decided to have him. Chimchar was a great Pokemon in the Pokemon Diamond and Pearl series; it’s unfortunate that Chimchar had to suffer throughout the anime.

Chimchar was first met when Paul was strolling along a route and he saw a wild Chimchar being chased by a horde of vicious Zangoose. Chimchar fled as fast as he could until he was stopped by the dead-end of a cliff. It is there where Chimchar unleashed his full power. Paul was watching Chimchar as he dodged the Zangoose’s attacks. Chimchar was so afraid and tormented that he had no choice but to fight back. Chimchar used flame wheel and sent out a fury of flames rapidly spinning around in a spiral. The Zangoose ran away quickly and Chimchar remained in the centre of the ash and flames. Paul realised Chimchar’s power and walked up to Chimchar, asking if Chimchar would like to go with him.

Chimchar was part of Paul’s team. He was shown battling with Paul many times in the anime but most of the time he lost. Paul was getting frustrated with Chimchar as he had never repeated his true power that he unleashed when fighting the group of Zangoose so he criticised it for being weak. Paul regularly tried to get Chimchar to show his power again so he tortured it by making it fight stronger Pokemon that were too powerful for it to defeat. Paul’s idea of training Chimchar was seriously wrong. He even made his Pokemon team attack him in hopes of re-creating his true power. Ash saw what was going on and explained that it was wrong and not the right way to treat Pokemon but Paul ignored this. Paul wouldn’t even send Chimchar to the Pokemon center when it was injured as he didn’t care for it.

Pokemon – Stopped In The Name Of Love

By Carl00456

This is my favourite episode in the Diamond and Pearl series of Pokemon. I enjoyed it so much as it features my favourite Pokemon, Piplup! The bond between Dawn and Piplup has greatly grown since Dawn first started out on her adventure and this episode goes through some recaps but shows how much they have both grown.

The episode mainly focuses on Piplup. He doesn’t want to evolve because he cherishes the memories he has with dawn. Over the episode he forces himself not to evolve by constantly using bide. This leads Piplup to get tired easily and he ends up in a Pokemon centre. He looks so cute sleeping in a bed! Dawns is worried about Piplup and doesn’t understand that Piplup does not want to evolve. When Piplup looked in the mirror and saw itself as a Prinplup it made me realise how ugly his evolutions were and how special Piplup is as a Pokemon. His stubborn and humorous attitude still continues as he occasionally flails his arms around in the air and runs away from Dawn. The moment when he is sitting under a waterfall trying not to evolve is my favourite, it shows how cool and determined Piplup is. Dawn, being Dawn, still does not understand that Piplup does not want to evolve and it takes him to be captured to finally get the message. Team Rocket cause havoc in a giant machine, shaped to look like a Prinplup, by capturing Piplup and Prinplup and trying to catch Empoleon.

Pokemon Best Wishes episode 004 Review

By Trainer_Auro

Three episodes; three Pokemon. At this rate, Ash’s party will be full in no time. Last time, he caught the adorable water type; Oshawott. Well, technically, he didn’t catch it. It was the Oshawott from Professor Juniper’s lab, which she told Ash to take care of after its escape. Watching Pikachu and Oshawott interact was amusing, but now we should get a better idea of Oshawott’s character. We start off this fourth episode with Ash approaching a city, excited for his first Gym battle.

Introductions aside, it’s time for a play-by-play review. Warning, the following WILL contain spoilers. I recommend you watch this series on your own, but if you’re in a hurry, want another opinion, or just don’t feel like watching, this will be quick, and to the point without losing the details.

Pokemon Best Wishes Episode 003 Review

By Trainer_Auro

After two episodes, Ash already has two Pokemon; Pikachu and Pidove. Hopefully he doesn’t fill out his party too soon, and stick us with the same six for the rest of the season. It would be even better if he caught more than six, and switched some things around every now and then. Something I’ve noticed about Team Rocket is that in both the episodes we’ve seen them in, they’ve used their classic mechanical arms to grab Pikachu, and yet they seem so different. But enough about Team Rocket for now.

This time, we start off with Ash and Iris heading towards Striaton (Sanyou city) to challenge the gym.
